North West Province :: overview
North West Province: a luxurious African hideaway
Set in the heart of the western Magaliesberg, the North West Province is rich in both man-made and natural attractions. A salient landscape of colours characterises the flora and fauna of the North West Province – the ideal backdrop for a number of holiday resorts and world-class game reserves.
A holiday to the North West province usually offers a variety of excellent activities and tourist attractions. With game reserves and national parks, historical towns and villages and an internationally acclaimed holiday resort, Sun City, the North West Province is one of the top tourist destinations in South Africa.
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve attracts a large number of tourists every year mainly because of the reserve’s unique setting: the entire reserve is set on an ancient dormant volcano. The last volcanic eruption was recorded 1 300 million years ago, and the remains of the volcano provide a beautiful backdrop for this magnificent game reserve.
Also located in the North West province, Sun City is internationally known as one of South Africa’s premier holiday resorts. With luxury hotels and cabanas as accommodation choices, an entertaining casino and a myriad of water sport activities within the resort, Sun City is popular among both tourists and locals.
Sun City: Africa’s premier resort
Sun City is set in the rugged bushveld of the North West province, nestled amidst an ancient volcano. With top-notch accommodation, services and activities to keep most visitors amused at almost any time of day and night, Sun City offers a world of entertainment in a single location. Luxury with a touch of African class is the overarching theme of the resort. Guests can enjoy the beautiful scenery and activities in a variety of settings, including wild jungle forests, plunging waterfalls, undulating cliffs and crystal clear waters.
Lesedi cultural village
Traditional African culture is a concept that intrigues many visitors who set foot on the shores of Africa. The North West province often enables tourists to catch a glimpse of these fascinating traditions and customs when visiting the Lesedi cultural village. The village is set amongst a series of rocky hills and extensive bushveld, which contribute to the cultural ambience of the village. While at Lesedi cultural village, one can usually enjoy scrumptious meals at the Nyama Choma restaurant, which offers a Pan-African buffet, after which you can relax around the village campfire exchanging stories and songs with the locals.
De Wildt cheetah and wildlife trust
De Wildt cheetah and wildlife trust is a protected breeding facility for cheetahs and some of Africa’s other endangered species. The concept of this facility is to keep these magnificent creatures from becoming extinct. The De Wildt cheetah and wildlife trust has led to the births of hundreds of cheetah cubs, which have subsequently been raised and nurtured, and then moved to game reserves across the country. The facility is also responsible for helping to prevent other endangered animals from becoming extinct, including the wild dog, the brown hyena, the suni antelope, the blue and red duiker, the riverine rabbit and the African vulture. A visit to this magnificent breeding facility often gives visitors a newfound appreciation for the species that are housed here.
