Mpumalanga :: overview
Mpumalanga: The Paradise City
Mpumalanga, formerly known as the Eastern Transvaal, is a major tourist destination in South Africa. With a magnitude of flora and fauna, picturesque landscapes of unspoiled natural beauty and a rich tribal history, Mpumalanga holds much promise when it comes to tourist attractions.
Affectionately called “The Paradise City” by many, Mpumalanga covers approximately 80 000km² and is chiefly made up of undulating highlands, verdant wetlands and towering escarpments. When planning your holiday to the Mpumalanga region, you can experience the raw beauty of nature. The Mpumalanga Lowveld and Highveld mountains, picturesque vistas, widespread savannahs, plunging rivers and waterfalls, and untamed forests all provide breathtaking views. With activities that may include bird watching, game viewing, hiking, horse riding, river rafting, fishing, angling and abseiling, Mpumalanga offers entertainment for almost every type of tourist.
Mpumalanga is an idyllic hideaway to escape from the daily stresses of routine. With contrasting landscapes, Mpumalanga’s mostly unspoiled environments beckon to be explored.
The Blyde River Canyon
The Blyde River Canyon is one the largest natural chasms in South Africa. Dropping approximately 800 metres to the river below, the Blyde River Canyon offers a host of scenic attractions with striking views across the Drakensberg escarpment. The high rainfall of this plateau area results in a series of beautiful waterfalls, some of which can be seen when following hiking trails through the area and others that are deeply hidden amongst a forest of towering pine and eucalyptus trees. The diverse plant life of Blyde River Canyon is also owing to the area’s healthy rainfall, and can often offer an invigorating experience of nature.
The Echo Caves
The Echo Caves, discovered in the 1920s, consist of some of the oldest caves in the world. Nestled beneath the rolling hills of the Mpumalanga escarpment, the Echo Caves are considered by many visitors to be a fascinating wonderland of stalagmites and stalactites. These caves have cavernous rooms that rise high above one’s head with one room measuring approximately 60 metres high. The Echo Caves are a remarkable site to visit.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
If you’re in search of excellent safari drives with top-notch game-viewing opportunities, then the Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Mpumalanga is an ideal destination. The Sabi Sands Game Reserve is one of the most exclusive private game reserves in South Africa, and usually offers some of the best game-viewing experiences in the world. Located next to Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve also hosts the famous Big 5, and there are no fences that restrict the animals from crossing over into either park. The Sabi Sands Game Reserve is well-known for its large number of leopards and if you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to see these nimble creatures up close.
