Limpopo Province :: overview

Limpopo: an untamed wonderland

Limpopo is home to a myriad of nature parks and game reserves; it is the province many tourists visit in search of a typical African safari experience. Named after the great Limpopo River that marks the region’s northern border, Limpopo is a province with an abundance of wildlife, striking natural landscapes and a plethora of cultural heritage sites that feature relics dating back thousands of years.

If sunset safari drives across sweeping landscapes in search of an elephant or buffalo sound like the ideal way to spend an evening, then Limpopo is an excellent holiday choice for you. One of the most renowned game parks in Limpopo is Kruger National Park, which covers the northern region of Limpopo and stretch up into South Africa. The Kruger National Park is a large sanctuary for many of the country’s most endangered wildlife species and is one of the top venues for game viewing when visiting Africa.

Apart from the province’s rich offerings of game and nature reserves, Limpopo also offers travellers a unique archaeological journey through historic locations in which they can view fascinating artefacts and the remains of ancient buildings.

The Limpopo province offers an array of interesting places to see:

Kruger National Park: home of the Big 5

Covering nearly two million hectares of land, Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Limpopo. The park is home to South Africa’s Big 5: the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and black rhinoceros. The Kruger National Park in Limpopo enables these mammals to live in their natural habitat, while also offering tourists an opportunity to view some of the world’s most famous wildlife up close. Apart from game viewing, the Kruger National Park is also known for its rich, unspoiled wilderness of baobab and fever trees, as well as marula and mopane trees – many of which provide shade for the wildlife residing in the park.

The Bushveld/Waterberg region

The Bushveld/Waterberg region, also known as the Water Mountain, is made up of stretches of mountain ranges, and is considered by many to be the closest example of an African savannah. Waterberg boasts a remarkable array of scenery such as plummeting mountain gorges, clear streams and an undulating bushveld that is sometimes complemented by late-afternoon thunder storms. The incredible rock formations often make for unique photographic opportunities, while the mountains offer a range of hiking trails. Extreme sport fanatics can also find entertainment at the many rivers and gorges that are ideal for a range of water sport activities.

Mapungubwe: Limpopo’s ‘forgotten’ city
Mapungubwe is a lost city in Limpopo that used to be the largest gold and ivory trading kingdom for major countries such as China, India and Egypt. It’s comprises large open plains, a far-reaching savannah and broken-down remains of an abandoned city. Today, tourists may be able to view the ruins of the city’s ancient palace sites as well as the entire settlement area that was thought to be a major commercial hub over 400 years ago.
