Free State :: overview
The Free State: South Africa’s major agricultural centre
With large open plains of cropland, towering sandstone mountains and a cloudless sky for much of the year, the Free State offers striking views of natural beauty. The region is known to receive beautiful summer days for a significant portion of the year and is considered by many to be an ideal playground for outdoor enthusiasts.
Situated between the Vaal and Orange rivers, the Free State is a haven for water sports. River rafting, canoeing and kayaking in these rivers present extensive entertainment opportunities. The rivers are also a source of sustenance for the Free State’s rich cropland; thus the province is known as South Africa’s granary - the primary hub of agriculture in the country.
With its large number of attractions that boast many cultural and historical landmarks, the Free State offers an array of exciting outdoor activities. While water sport activities are popular among travellers, there are many other options available such as wildlife viewing, scenic nature drives and tours to prominent parks and reserves.

Bloemfontein: the capital of the Free State
As one of two major towns in the province, Bloemfontein is the central business hub of the Free State. With a modern infrastructure and the enjoyment of a cosmopolitan city centre, Bloemfontein comprises a mix of both modern complexes and old, historical buildings such as the City Hall, the Anglican Cathedral, the Old Presidency and the Dutch Reformed church twin tower.
Activities in Bloemfontein range from informative tours to museums and historical buildings to tranquil walks through nature parks. You may even try your luck at the Windmill Casino and Entertainment Centre, or relish in a game of golf at the many golf parks in Bloemfontein.
The Free State cropland
The Free State dominates South Africa’s agricultural industry with approximately 32 000km² of cultivated land and a further estimated 87 000km² of natural, golden veld. The cropland covers areas in both the northern and southern regions of the Free State.
Apart from providing grain, the ethanol plants from the agricultural crops also contribute to South Africa’s fuel production industry – thus making South Africa a pioneer in bio fuel production.
The northern and southern Free State regions
Most of the northern Free State is a picturesque vista of golden cropland, owing to the area’s fertile soil and healthy rainfall. Many maize and wheat farmers open their doors to visitors to enjoy a tour of their traditional Free State farms.
Along the Vaal River in the north lies a lush, green valley decked with swaying willow trees. Guests can also choose to overnight at one of the fine resorts located near the river bank; these are popular amongst anglers, fishermen and yachtsmen. Stunning river resorts stretch all the way to the south of the Free State, leaving guests spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation.
The southern Free State region hosts a prominent engineering feature, the Gariep Dam – one of the largest dams in South Africa. This bountiful mass of inland water is ideal for swimming, water-skiing, fishing, yachting and canoeing, as well as relaxing on the banks of the enormous reservoir.
