Windhoek :: overview

Namibia’s capital, Windhoek lies in a basin in the central highlands and is surrounded by mountains. It is a city often described as having a continental atmosphere which can be ascribed to its architecture, cuisine, dress codes and educational institutions yet also has the colour, sounds and tempo of a modern African city.

Pavement displays of African drums and woodcarvings from the north contrast with elegant shops offering sophisticated Swakara garments and Namibian gemstones set in individually designed pieces of jewellery. While some shops display clothing, silver and glassware imported from Europe, others stock casual and colourful cloths from West Africa.

Windhoek offers a wide variety of hotels, guesthouses, pensions and bed and breakfasts from which to choose, according to one’s needs. There are also several guestfarms and safari lodges in the area surrounding the city.

Windhoek on Foot

If you’re keen on walking and would like to orient yourself in the capital, a leisurely circular route starting and ending at the Gustav Voigts Center in Independence Avenue will give you a good idea of what the city has to offer. It should take you between three and four hours to complete, but be advised to wear a hat, especially if it’s summer, and a comfortable pair of shoes.

Features of historical interest

On hillsides overlooking the city towards the west are three castles build from local stone as residences at the beginning of the 1900’s. After being occupied for many years by the well-known Levinson family. Heinitzburg Castle has been enlarged and functions as a hotel today. With its magnificent view over the city to the west, it is a favored venue for sundowners and cocktail functions, and has an excellent restaurant.

Art and culture

Windhoek has an active and lively community of art and crafts people. Galleries where exhibitions are held regularly and art can be viewed and purchased are the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) on the corner of John Meinert Street and Robert Mugabe Avenue and the Yebo Gallery in the John Muafangejo Art Centre (JMAC) in Katutura.

Daan Viljoen Game Park

This small park is situated 25km outside of Windhoek in the Khomas Hochland hills and is sanctuary to a relatively large population of game species typical of Namibia’s highlands.

The Whites

Approximately 100 000 Namibians of European descent currently live in Namibia, of whom about two-thirds speak Afrikaans, one quarter German and the rest mostly English, and to a lesser extent, Portuguese.

The Coloureds

Today people of mixed descent are an integral part of most populations throughout Africa, but because of the nature of their descent, they are sometimes not integrated into any of the other cultural groups. This is also the case in Namibia.
