Darmaraland :: overview

Striking rock engravings representing one of Africa’s largest rock art concentrations with diverse scenery.
 
Damaraland, being part of the Kunene Region, is one of the most scenic areas in Namibia, prehistoric water courses with open plains and grassland, massive granite hills and distant mountains create the landscape. The most famous area being Twyfelfontein (meaning doubtful fountain) which has 2 000 plus engravings estimated to be 6 000 years old and the newer paintings approximately 2 000 years old.  This art, situated in its natural red rock gallery was awarded World Heritage status, the first in Namibia.
 
General information and & tips on the area:
-  Either a one or two night stay depending on your interests in the area some of which
   feature as Namibia’s most successful ecotourism enterprises.
-  A variety of lodges in the area who offer activities such as:  nature walks, nature
   drives, rhino tracking, horse riding, night drives and visiting the community.
-  To the east on route to Outjo are the Ugab Terraces & Ugab Vingerklip (Finger Rock).
-  Geological  sites in the area include the Petrified Forest, Burnt Mountain & the Organ  
   Pipes. 
-  When traveling from Swakopmund via Uis visit Cape Cross Seal colony.
-  One travels through communal areas where hand made items are sold on the side on
   the road.
-  Well known area for seeing desert adapted elephant and black rhino.
